- If you only ask for a translation, you will get a literal translation. Acid regulator, for example, will then be translated as pH regulator.
- Specify your query to: Please provide a translation based on legislation (EU) No. 1169/2011, you will already get a better result. However, even here the exact terms according to Annex VII Part C still do not come out.
- Please specify the question to: Please provide a translation based on legislation (EU) No. 1169/2011 Annex VII part C, then again you get a better result. But even here, the exact terms according to Annex VII Part C do not appear for all desired languages.
Reliability
So it seems that not all information that AI/ChatGPT has access to is up to date for all languages. Moreover, you yourself must therefore have sound knowledge of the legislation in order to prepare the correct source text and then ask the right questions in order to arrive at a legally correct translation.At the moment, AI/ChatGPT is not yet reliable enough and its use in translations of foodstuffs will potentially lead to legally incorrect translations and thus products that may have to be withdrawn from the market.
How to move forward?
It is certainly interesting to keep an eye on developments or develop tools of your own that use AI. This will make the information more and more accurate and in time it will certainly be possible to use AI to make translations.
