Normec Foodlab achieves accreditation for STEC analysis (screening, isolation and confirmation)

We are proud to announce that Normec Foodlab recently received accreditation to perform STEC analysis for both screening and isolation and confirmation. This step shows that we are serious about food safety and providing reliable microbiological testing. The need for STEC testing has been made especially clear recently by an E. coli (STEC) outbreak in baby carrots in the United States. This incident shows how important it is to actively test food products, not only to protect consumers, but also to avoid risks to your brand.

What is an STEC?

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a group of bacteria that occurs naturally in the intestines of humans and animals. E. coli consists of very many different serotypes. Many of these types are harmless, but E. coli also contains types that can cause disease. One such group is the shiga-toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). The E. coli group within STEC that can cause serious illness is enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC).

Shigatoxin is a toxin that can damage the intestinal wall. A small proportion of cases of illness caused by STEC can progress to Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). Normally the fatality rate of HUS is low, but in 2011 there was a very aggressive strain with a higher lethality rate.
