A strategic challenge for QA managers in the food industry

For QA managers in the food industry in the Netherlands and Belgium, water is no longer a given that belongs only to the production line or cleaning procedures. Climate change, water scarcity, stricter regulations and social pressure are putting pressure on the water chain. It is about sufficient availability, quality, efficient use and minimizing environmental impact. At the same time, there is a growing expectation that companies not only react to regulations, but proactively make their water strategy more sustainable.

Between seducing and misleading: the importance of consumer confidence

The food industry is all about appeal. From colorful packaging to clever claims about health, sustainability or origin, producers want to entice consumers to buy. But where does seduction end and deception begin? In Europe, this line is not only ethically relevant, but also sharply defined by law. Consumers are increasingly aware of what they eat and pay more attention than ever to labels and claims. This makes transparency and honesty on packaging essential for long-term success.

Voluntary information on your food packaging

As a producer, you naturally want your product to stand out on the shelf. Voluntary information on the packaging offers an excellent opportunity to do so. Think of additional claims such as "organic", "high in fiber" or "sustainably produced". This information helps persuade consumers and distinguish your product from the competition. But it's a fine line between enticing and misleading. How do you make sure you don't cross it?

What food information is required on an online store?

Ordering products online is very popular among consumers. Food products are also increasingly offered online. But what information is mandatory on your webshop? And what should you keep in mind? When selling food online, you have to deal with Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011, regarding the provision of food information to consumers. Consumers who buy products must have information about the product available to them before they make a purchase decision. There are a number of things to consider.

Labeling & legislation: 3 pitfalls for food manufacturers

Creating a good label for a food product is often trickier than it seems. With all the rules and exceptions, it quickly feels like you have to find your way through a maze of legislation. The basis lies in Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 - which tells you what all you have to mention on your packaging if you sell your product in Europe. But it doesn't stop there. Depending on the product you are marketing, all kinds of additional rules may apply. At Normec Foodcare we have a separate department with Labeling Specialists who work daily on, among other things, label checks and solving labeling and legislative issues. In practice, we see that things regularly go wrong and that labels - usually unconsciously - do not comply with legislation. Labeling is precision work and a mistake is easily made. In this article we take you through the biggest pitfalls in food labeling so that you as a producer, marketer or quality manager can avoid these mistakes.

Danger of using ChatGPT when translating label texts

As a food supplier within Europe, you often have to deal with multilingual labels. We know from past experience that Google translate sometimes gives very clumsy translations and that these certainly do not meet legal requirements. But what if we deploy AI and let ChatGPT do our translations. Will we then get the correct legal translation? The technology is now there and there is more and more information from which ChatGPT can choose. So the question of whether ChatGPT can do legal translations is certainly appropriate. To put it to the test, we tested this at Normec Foodcare and we noticed a few things.

Specification management: what's involved?

All food companies have to deal with it: requesting raw material specifications, processing them and using a recipe to create your own product specifications and label texts. Often you also have to fill customer systems with all this information. Nowadays you don't "just do this on the side". You have to be well informed about legislation and have to implement changes in all systems. How do you do this properly and efficiently?
