Wheyco (formerly DVNutrition) has been using digital inspections and the online manual for several years. For the past 1.5 years, they have also been using the E-learning module. The company takes advantage of the unique integration between the digital handbook and E-learning courses. Mirjam Schalkwijk and Annette Wijnands introduced this approach to the organization from within the HR department.

Ensuring Learning & Development

In 2017, the company was looking for a Learning & Development system to ensure training and education within the organization. Mirjam and Annette met with several providers to compare the options available on the market for training software. Mirjam explains how they arrived at their decision to choose E-learning: “User-friendliness and accessibility of the E-learning system were our top priorities. Since we work extensively with procedures, work instructions, and standards in our online manual, we were eager to train employees directly using this documentation and thereby ensure knowledge retention. The direct link between learning and our manual makes this software easy for our organization to use.”

User-Friendliness

For Wheyco, the software’s user-friendliness was one of the most important requirements for making the switch to online learning. “We felt that the e-learning platform had to be very easy to use, both for employees and for our department to manage. We find the module very user-friendly and have also noticed that employees can easily follow the training courses. If we have any questions, the support department is quick to assist us,” Annette says enthusiastically.

Continuous Improvement

Mirjam continues: “For years, we’ve made continuous improvement a top priority. But how can you put this into practice within an organization? The link between the digital handbook and e-learning offers a solution.” With this feature, Wheyco links documents from the manual to an e-learning course. When documents are updated or new ones are added, employees are immediately invited to take a new e-learning course. Through the document matrix, the company thus has a continuous overview of which employee has acquired which competencies and is therefore eligible for a position. Mirjam speaks enthusiastically about the experience with this integration: “This way, our employees’ knowledge is always up to date. They possess the competencies needed to perform a role. In addition to e-learning courses, changes are also taught on the job. Only when employees are aware of the change, are willing to work with it, and the change is embedded in their hearts, minds, and hands is the process truly secured.”

Flexibility and Accountability

Mirjam and Annette, along with the organization, recognize that digital training via e-learning aligns with modern training methods. Additionally, this offers a significant practical advantage for 24-hour production—where work is carried out continuously in shifts. Annette: “You’re no longer dependent on training sessions that you have to schedule during office hours. People can take training courses during their own work hours. They decide for themselves when a quiet and convenient time is to do so. Moreover, during an audit, it’s also easy to demonstrate how you’ve ensured training and education within the organization.”

Food Safety Culture

The transition from in-person training to online learning was a significant change. “There’s much more training now than before, but we do get the impression that it’s become more of a way of life. For example, we’re now noticing that people speak up on their own if a training course has expired or if they’ve failed a course. This has helped us foster a greater sense of personal responsibility. E-learning is now seen as a standard method of training within the employee development process. I’m therefore incredibly proud that all employees are completing the e-learning courses properly and on time,” Mirjam concludes with a proud smile on her face.
